Overview

Wein Mail is an email service we built and run ourselves. Anyone can sign up for an @wein.dev address at mail.wein.dev, then send and receive mail in the browser or connect their usual mail app over IMAP/SMTP.

01Why it exists

The problem

Email is one of the oldest internet services, and one of the hardest to run well: MX records, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, TLS certificates, spam and abuse protection all need constant care, so many teams simply rely on the big platforms. We wanted to prove that a small team can build a complete email service with open sign-up — and keep it running reliably.

02Approach

How it works

  1. 01 / 03

Mail is handled by Stalwart, an open-source mail server we deploy on our own dedicated server: MX, SPF, DKIM signing and DMARC are configured, TLS certificates renew automatically and the web front end sits behind Cloudflare.

  2. 02 / 03

We wrote the sign-up service ourselves: Cloudflare Turnstile verification, Argon2id password hashing, and per-IP and site-wide rate limits. Each account can send up to 50 messages a day, with at most 10 recipients each, curbing abuse at the source.

  3. 03 / 03

Open to everyone: every account gets 1 GiB of storage and can use webmail or connect any mail app over IMAP (993) and SMTP (465) with SSL/TLS. We handle day-to-day monitoring and maintenance.

03Features

What it does

01

Free @wein.dev address

Pick a username, pass the human check and you’re in.

02

1 GiB of storage

Every account gets 1 GiB of mail storage.

03

Webmail

Read, write, reply and forward right in the browser.

04

Works with mail apps

Connect mail apps on your phone or computer over IMAP and SMTP (SSL/TLS).

05

Sender authentication

Outgoing mail is DKIM-signed and backed by SPF and DMARC, reducing the risk of spoofing.

06

Built against abuse

Human verification, sign-up rate limits and daily sending caps keep the service clean and reliable.
